The story behind the festival Holi and its importance

Holi

Holi is a festival that promotes the victory of good over evil, with an interesting story behind it. The story of Holika Dahan is about the victory of the honest and good despite the devil being strong. The story of Holika Dahan is based on 3 characters which include the evil king named Hiranyakashipu, his devil sister Holika and Hiranyakashipu’s son Prahlad.

As the legend goes, King Hiranyakashipu had a boon from Lord Brahma that he could not be killed by man or animal, neither day or night, neither inside nor outside nor with any ammunition. Now the king became arrogant and ordered everyone to worship him as a god.

However, his son Prahlad refused to worship him as he used to worship Lord Vishnu and he continues worshipping him.

Seeing this king was angry and he ordered his sister to anyhow kill Prahlad. His sister Holika had the boon to resist fire. So she on her lap kept Prahlad and sat on the burning bonfire to kill Prahlad. However, Prahlad was Lord Vishnu’s devotee and so Lord Vishnu was killed & as a result, she burnt herself in the fire and Prahlad came out alive without a trace from the fire. And thus Lord Vishnu saved Prahlad, which signifies the loss of evil upon god, and so Holika Dahan is celebrated by organizing bonfire and doing worship and after a day, Holi is celebrated.

Faith in the Almighty was restored as evil was destroyed and virtue prevailed.  This is the reason why this festival holds immense religious reverence for the devotees of Lord Vishnu.
